KATHMANDU, June 11: Supreme Court has instructed the government not to allow any construction that does not meet existing standards and criteria set by the government.

Responding to a writ petition filed by Advocate Ananta Raj Luintel, a single bench of Chief Justice Ram Kumar Prasad Shah on Thursday ordered the government to monitor all under construction buildings to ensure that they do not ignore existing legal provisions.Meanwhile, the apex court also issued a show cause notice to the defendants asking them to furnish reports on what were done in the past to ensure houses were earthquake resilient and what future plans they had to enforce the existing building code.

The petitioner had also sought an order requiring the government to approve construction designs of residences only after completing soil test of the concerned area. He had also called for the demolition of structures built altering the design approved by the concerned government agencies.

Luintel had named the Office of Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, Ministry of Local Development, Ministry of Law and Justice as well as Kathmandu Valley Development Authority as defendants.
