KATHMANDU, April 6: The Supreme Court on Monday issued a mandamus not to extend the investigation period for former Prime Minister KP Oli and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak.
On Monday, a joint bench of Justices Binod Sharma and Sunil Kumar Pokharel ordered that their detention cannot be extended even if their habeas corpus writs are dismissed.
Court allows two more days' remand of Oli, Lekhak
Earlier, the Kathmandu District Court had extended the detention period for the third time by 5 days, effective from April 4. Oli and Lekhak will be released from custody on Thursday after the expiry of the period with the SC's order.
The SC through its order has asked authorities to complete the investigation within the extended period of five days and to come up with a decision to proceed with the case or not. Provided the police do not present the case in court within the stipulated time, the duos must be released on bail or on a regular date after completing the process and the remaining investigation should be carried out, as per the SC issued order.
The police are investigating the then Prime Minister Oli and Home Minister Lekhak on charges of gross negligence in security arrangements during the Gen Z protests that took place on September 8-9.
