Sales of sandals go up

KATHMANDU, April 14: Despite the rise in prices, sales of sandals, slippers and high-heels -- three major varieties of footwear people switch to during summer season -- has picked up by around 40 percent.



Traders around the valley said that prices of footwear have become dearer by around 20 percent compared to last year due to the rise in customs duty and increase in Baht.[break]



Traders around the valley have introduced wide varieties of slippers and sandals for both men and women. This year, according to traders, the demand for high heels has increased and is mostly preferred by teenagers.



New designs of footwear are on display in shoe stores around the valley. Different brand of slippers such as Mango, Miss, Everlast, Peltz, among others, are available in the market.



Ladies footwear with flowers beads and embroidery is expected to rule the market this year.



“Sales of sandals and open shoes has gone up because people cannot put on boots in the scorching sunny day,” said Udash Rai, sales manager of Celesti Collection at People´s Plaza.



The store imports slippers, sandals and high heels from Thailand, Korea and India. According to Rai, the price of footwear has increased by around 20 percent but that it has not affected the sales. The store sells around 30 pairs of sandals daily compared to around 10 pairs a month ago.



Sandals in the stores around the valley are available in the range of Rs 650 to Rs 2,000 and slippers are available in the range of Rs 350 to Rs 1,500. Similarly, different new models of high-heels are priced between Rs 1,500 and Rs 5,000.



According to Ganesh Shrestha, proprietor of Remix Collection, sales of slippers has seen a boost compared to in the winter season. The store sells around 20 pairs of footwear daily, up from 4 pairs a day a month ago.
