Traders in different parts of the capital told Republica that sales of these accessories have soared by around 30 percent with the arrival of the month which began on Monday.
“Most of the buyers of these products are married females, but lately even unmarried ones have started purchasing these accessories in the hope of getting a better life partner,” said Santa Aryal, proprietor of B&B Cosmetics.[break[
Shravan is considered a holy month, during which most of the Hindu women keep a strict fast in the name of Lord Shiva for longevity of their spouse´s life. Since green and yellow bangles together with red saris are believed highly auspicious, female Hindu population in the country throng to purchase these accessories during the month.
Aryal, who runs a wholesale-cum-retail store at Koteshwar, disclosed that average per day sales of accessories like bangles, beads and mehendi have climbed to Rs 7,000 from normal daily sales of Rs 3,000.
“We have reported higher sales of bangles as every female can choose to wear it while sales of beads are on the lower end as only married women put on this accessory,” Aryal said.
Kamala Baral, proprietor of Resma Cosmetic at Koteshwar, echoed Aryal. “In normal months, I hardly sell 50 dozens bangles per day. Currently, I´m in for a windfall as the store is selling more than 100 dozens a day,” she said.
A snap survey conducted by Republica showed that prices of these accessories have gone up by 25 percent over the year due to the rise in import cost. “But it hasn´t affected sales,” Aryal told Republica.
Currently, bangles are available in town for Rs 30 to Rs 250 per dozen. Earlier, this accessory used to cost Rs 20 to Rs 225 per dozen. Similarly, beads are selling in the range of Rs 20 to Rs 500 per piece, as against Rs 10 to Rs 450 a year ago. The price of mehendi, on the other hand, has reached Rs 25 per standard packet, from last year´s Rs 15.
“I never wear any accessories during other months of the year but this month is special,” said Laxmi Giri, a 12-grader unmarried girl, who has been wearing bangles and putting on mehendi during this month for the last five years.
