Rupee sheds value, gold price rises

KATHMANDU, Aug 21: Nepali rupee lost 50 paisa against US dollar this week as the Indian currency, with which rupee is pegged, lost value against the greenback. Gold price, on the other hand, went up by Rs 1,975 per 10 grams over.CURRENCY

Rupee lost 50 paisa to close at 105 against dollar on Friday. Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB), the central regulatory bank, opened currency trading on Sunday with value of dollar fixed at Rs 104.5. The local currency appreciated by 19 paisa against US dollar on Monday to settle at 104.31. However, rupee lost 48 paisa against the greenback on Tuesday to close at 104.79. The local currency lost another 2 paisa on Wednesday to close at 104.81 against dollar.

According to Reuters, Indian rupee fell to as low as 65.5 against dollar on Thursday, its lowest since September 2013, tracking losses in Asian currencies after a slump in Chinese equities reinforced concerns about the world's second-largest economy.

Rupee gained 18 paisa to settle at 104.63 against dollar on Thursday. The local currency lost another 37 paisa against US dollar to close the week's trading at 105 on Friday - the last trading day of the week.

Meanwhile, rupee lost 62 paisa against euro and 84 paisa against Pound Sterling over the week. A euro was exchanged at Rs 117.07 on Friday, while the Pound Sterling was valued Rs 163.95.

BULLION

Gold price went up by whopping Rs 1,975 per 10 grams this week due to continuous rise in gold price in the international market. Trading opened on Sunday with price of gold fixed at Rs 42,265 per 10 grams.

Though gold price remained unchanged on Monday, it increased by Rs 345 per 10 grams to Rs 42,610 on Tuesday. Gold price remained unchanged on Wednesday but went up by Rs 430 per 10 grams to settle at Rs 43,040 on Thursday. Price of the yellow metal increased further by Rs 1,200 per 10 grams to close the week's trading at Rs 44,240 on Friday.

According to gold dealers, price of gold increased by US$ 27 per troy ounce to $1,165 on Friday compared to Thursday.

Similarly, price of silver went up by Rs 13 per 10 grams this week. On Friday, silver was traded at Rs 613 per 10 grams.
