KATHMANDU, June 3: Rastriya Prajatantra Party (Nepal), which has been protesting federalism, republic and secularism since its very inception in 2005, has demanded referendum on issues related to constitutional monarchy, federalism and secularism.

The party headed by Kamal Thapa, who was the home minister during then king Gyanendra´s direct rule, voiced its demand by submitting a memorandum to CA chairman Subas Nembang.

RPP-N´s demand is something against the Interim Constitution. The main law of the country says that Nepal will be a federal republic and a secular state.

Earlier, the party had organized a protest rally before handing over the memorandum to Nembang. Addressing the really, Thapa said democracy was in crisis. He also announced a movement for democracy.

“The movement is necessary to save country from foreign interference and protect national sovereignty,” Thapa said, who was home minister at the height of Janaandolan in 2006.

He also urged other political parties to support his party´s movement irrespective of their political interests. “It is necessary for the Nepali Congress, CPN-UML or Maoists to join the movement aimed at saving the country from being disintegrated,” Thapa said addressing his supporters.

Thapa further said that his party would launch protests in the parliament and the streets to press the government for the party´s demand for referendum on monarchy, federalism and secularism. “These issues related to people should not be decided in a room without consulting people,” Thapa said.
