The life-like drill carried out by the rescue team was a spectacular sight for locals and officials as there was no room for any mistake during the entire procedure.[break]
The drill kicks off with the receiving of information about a boat accident on Phewa Lake. A boat carrying 10 tourists has sunk. A team instantly goes into rescue mode and a helicopter hovers over the accident spot for immediate lift-over of the victims.
The helicopter lowers the rescue team at the spot along with rescue kits as others play the part of victims crying for help. In a matter of minutes, they are lifted from the scene. Everyone is saved in the end.
The rescue drill included the assistance of APF personal who recently trained in Bangladesh in rescue diving. Sniffer dogs were also used.
There have been many casualties in Phewa Lake. Many died for lack of immediate rescue.
“As accidents don´t come with prior notice, pre-planned preventive measures always help,” said Senior Superintendent of Police Durga Bahadur Kuwar. “Today´s successful demonstration proves that lives can be saved if there is correct information at the right time,” he added.
Extolling the performance of personal in the drill, chief of APF Kosh Raj Wanta referred to the recent loss of life in the Karnali bus mishap. “Rescue in the wee hours is what we need and this drill proves we can do it,” said Wanta.
