KATHMANDU, Aug 19: President Dr Ram Baran Yadav said on Sunday the current government cannot hold Constituent Assembly (CA) elections and underscored that national consensus is a must to obtain fresh CA mandate.

Speaking at a school program in Sundarijal, on the outskirt of the capital, Yadav also said this government can hold only parliamentary elections. He cautioned that the delay in forging consensus has put at risk gains achieved through the people’s movement. [break]

On his recent move to reject two election-related ordinances forwarded by the Maoist-led government, Yadav said, unlike the government which takes into consideration mainly legal aspects, he as the head of state cannot ignore constitution.

The president’s statement comes when UCPN (Maoist), which leads the ruling coalition, has made clear its intent of protest after Yadav refused on Friday to endorse the twin ordinances, the promulgation of which would facilitate conduction of CA polls, citing the lack of relevance.
