KATHMANDU, Oct 10: Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai has said his government withdrew criminal case against attackers of Maoist leader Shalikram Jammarkattel mainly because it was political in nature, but added it was not final.

In his written reply to the Supreme Court (SC) on Wednesday, Bhattarai said political cadres were involved in the attack on Jammarkattel. He added the government could withdraw cases that were political in nature.[break]

Bhattarai claimed that a cabinet meeting had decided to withdraw the case against the alleged attackers on the recommendation of UCPN (Maoist) and in consultation with the office of the attorney general.

Taking strong reservation to the government´s decision, Jammarkattel had filed a petition at the apex court urging it to scrap the government decision two weeks ago. Conducting first hearing on the petition, the SC had issued an interim order against the government´s decision.

Six peoples had allegedly attacked Jammarkattel in the capital one year ago.
