KATHMANDU, May 3: Around 300 Maoist cadres taking part in the anti-government protest in Kathmandu have fallen ill due to consumption of unhygienic water and food and sudden change of weather from their home locations.

"Around 300 have common cold, mild diarrhea, throat problems, allergy and other problems," President of All Nepal Public Health Workers Association Mangal BK said.[break]

BK said the problems arose due to some minor oversight in the management of food for such a large number of people in camps. "They have gone to nearby hospitals like TUTH, Bir, Teku and Kathmandu Model and come away after receiving treatment. The problems are minor and no one has been admitted as an in-patient," BK claimed.

Teku Hospital, however, refuted BK´s claim and said some Maoist cadres were admitted there. "Eighteen of them had come with diarrhea and nausea and four or five have been admitted here while the others have turned back after treatment at emergency," Dr Basudev Pandey of the hospital said. He conceded that no one was in a critical condition.

"Most of the patients were from a camp at Laboratory School in Kirtipur and there seems to be a problem with water management there. We have called up the party´s management and suggested to them to take steps to purify the drinking water," Dr Pandey added.

BK also said the management has become more cautious and started chlorinating the drinking water at every camp.

Meanwhile, Gajendra Bohora reports from Dang that 50 persons brought to Dang from the neighboring districts of Salyan and Pyuthan are suffering from diarrhea. Health workers from All Nepal Public Health Workers Association are currently treating the patients.

Likewise, dozens of Maoist cadres have fallen ill in Nepalgunj with diarrhea, common cold and allergy, according to Dinesh Gautam. The Maoist cadres, who had braved the blazing Sun on Sunday, got drenched in sudden rain on Monday.
