KATHMANDU, June 29 : The Nepal Student Union (NSU) has called for the appointment of Tribhuvan University’s Vice Chancellor (VC) based on merit and open competition, in line with the University’s existing selection guidelines.
NSU President Dujang Sherpa issued a circular on Sunday directing subordinate bodies to press for the appointment of a qualified VC under the “Vice Chancellor Selection and Recommendation Procedure, 2080.” He warned that failure to do so would result in pressure campaigns.

Sherpa criticized ongoing attempts to bypass the merit-based system in favor of political appointments, warning that such moves undermine academic integrity, transparency, and institutional dignity.
“There are clear signs that the appointment process is being driven by political interests and proximity to power, rather than academic qualifications,” Sherpa said in the circular. “NSU condemns this practice and has instructed its units to launch campaigns against such irregularities.”
NSU has also instructed its subordinate committees to initiate public discourse, collect signatures, and organize other pressure-based yet constructive activities. The organization plans to submit a joint protest letter to relevant authorities and collaborate with other student groups and independent organizations in its campaign.
