No. of foreign tourists up by 4.7% at Everest area

SOLUKHUMBU, Jan. 2: Number of foreign tourists visiting the Mt. Everest area has increased by 4.7 per cent in 2012 compared to 2011.



A total of 34,571 tourists visited the area in 2011 which the government had declared as the Tourism Year. Thirty-six thousand one hundred and seventy-nine tourists visited the area in 2012, according to Padam Bahadur Rai, Game Scout at the Sagarmatha National Park, Jorselle.[break]



Data shows that the number of tourists visiting the area was highest in October and the lowest in July. A total of 9,647 tourists had visited the area in October while the number was 266 in July.



The Office of the Sagarmatha National Park keeps the data of foreign tourists visiting the area but does not keep the data of Nepali tourists.



The Office estimates the number of domestic tourists, porters and tourist guides included, visiting the area is around five times more than the number of foreign tourists.
