KATHMANDU, August 2 : The Crop Development Directorate has said farmers in Kavre needn´t worry about their maize crop. The directorate assured the farmers on good harvest after a team of agronomists ruled out any faults in maize plant after conducting field visit on the affected area. [break]

The agronomists said growth of corn is found to be in ´milk to dough´ stage.

The agronomists conducted the field study after a group of farmers from Kavre VDC Ward No. 4 complained that their maize plants were abnormally tall and that they fear their maize plants won´t bear fruit. The agronomists submitted preliminary report on Thursday.

“The team found that maize plants were bearing fruits well and that farmers need not worry,” Suroj Pokharel, program director of the directorate, said. “Maize plants are relatively higher this year because of heavy rainfalls.”

He further added that overuse of fertilizers was the other reasons behind tall maize plants. The agronomists, however, have said the harvesting season might be delayed by a week.

A member of the inspection team said the issue is related to crop patterning. “The farmers were found worrying about potato plantation after harvesting maize, aiming to harvest off-season potato during the festival season of Dashain and Tihar,” the member said.
