NHRC urges govt to reform prison management

KATHMANDU, Aug 13: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed the Government of Nepal to make prison management and administrative activities within the prison transparent, provide humane treatment to inmates and make all prisons in the country human rights-friendly. 



The human rights watchdog body has issued the directive to effectively implement the recommendations given after carrying out on-site monitoring of the prisons, arrange adequate human resources, and enhance the capacity of all prisons, including those in Rupandehi and Kailali.

Issuing a press release on Tuesday, NHRC Spokesperson Dr. Tikaram Pokharel said the prison improvement is envisaged to make the process of transferring jailbirds transparent, chart out a strategy to not allow repetition of clashes in the prison, ensure efficient security arrangements in the jail, and develop the prison as a correction center.
