The baby survived the fall and was recovered from the tracks near the Bhojipura railway station by fellow passengers who rushed her to hospital, The Hindustan Times reported.
“The woman gave birth to a baby girl inside the toilet and the child fell on the rail tracks after slipping through the toilet outlet,” said Rajendra Singh, spokesperson for the North Eastern Railway.
The incident happened on the Tanakpur-Bareilly Passenger on Monday afternoon as the train was approaching Bhojipura station.
The woman Pushpa, a resident of Kanchanpur in Nepal, felt signs of labor and went to the bathroom.
After the newborn slipped through the toilet, she started screaming for help upon which fellow passengers pulled the emergency chain and stopped the train.
The train driver immediately alerted the station master and an ambulance was called, Singh said.
Doctors at the government hospital said both the mother and child are out of danger.
“The child has received a few minor injuries but is healthy. The mother too is healthy and we are planning to discharge them on Wednesday,” said Dr Saurabh Singh.
Reports said Pushpa was a single mother from a poor family.
