KATHMANDU, Sept 6: The increasing number of Facebook users in Nepal is a threat to cyber security, the Office of Certification and Controller said on Monday.

Certification Controller, Rajan Raj Pant, citing the number of Facebook users in Nepal to be almost 600,000, said that Facebook users are vulnerable to privacy & identity-theft, as hackers develop friendship with Internet users by the help of such social networking sites. [break]

Pant informed that after developing online friendship, hackers make their way to email address reaching in direction of access to credit card and ATM card, among others.

"This trend is very common in most of the countries and can be practiced in Nepal too," he said, adding that such behavior - called social engineering - has added trouble to internet users by providing personal information.

"One should not trust an unknown user and reveal any personal information," Pant added. He also suggested internet users to change their passwords every six months.

According to the statistics of facebakers.com, the number of Nepali users as of Monday has reached 587,260. Of them, 399,900 are male and 180,740 are female. More than 46 % of Nepali Facebook users are aged between 18 to 24 years while the penetration of Facebook in Nepal to online population stands at 93.84 %.
