KATHMANDU, Jan 11: Amid objections from the establishment faction of the Nepali Congress, a special convention called by the pro special convention group is set to begin from today.
The two-day special GENERAL convention, scheduled for January 11-12, will be inaugurated at 1:00 pm on Sunday at Bhrikutimandap in Kathmandu. For the opening session, a stage has been built at the open ground of Bhrikutimandap with seating for 50 guests.
In front of the stage, more than 6,000 chairs have been arranged in the open ground, according to Govinda Pudasaini, coordinator of the Stage Management Committee formed for the special convention. He said the area around the stage has been decorated with Congress flags, gates, banners, and publicity materials.
Pudasaini said preparations are underway to manage rallies arriving from different parts of the Kathmandu Valley and guide them into the venue in an orderly manner on the opening day. He added that the special convention will be chaired by Krishna Sabuj Baniya, president of the Nepali Congress Kathmandu, and that leaders of other political parties have not been invited.
The organizing committee said most of the convention delegates coming from across the country have already arrived, while others are still on their way. According to Accommodation and Food Management Committee coordinator Ramesh Dhamala, lodging arrangements have been made in various parts of Kathmandu for 3,600 delegates, with contingency plans in place to immediately accommodate an additional 200 delegates if needed.
Food and refreshments have also been arranged at the venue for delegates. Delegates will receive a meal coupon along with a bag after paying a fee of Rs 1,000. After the opening session, the closed-door session will be held in the Bhrikutimandap conference hall. Details of the policy documents to be discussed in the closed session have not yet been widely disclosed.
