Nepal, Israel to sign pact on agriculture

KATHMANDU, March 13: Nepal and Israel are signing an agreement to extend mutual co-operation for the promotion of agriculture by enhancing bilateral trade of agro-products and transferring technological know-how.



The agreement is also aimed at enhancing management of water for the development of agriculture sector. [break]



A Nepali delegation led by Minister for Agriculture and Co-operatives Mrigendra Kumar Singh Yadav is visiting Israel from March 14-18 to sign the pact, besides observing different agricultural projects there.



Dr Hari Dahal, spokesperson at the Ministry of Agriculture and Co-operatives (MoAC), told myrepublica.com that the agreement is aimed at extending cooperation in agriculture research and food security sector to contribute in achieving national goals of the two countries.



Under the agreement, both countries will promote technical, economic, scientific cooperation through different associations, organizations and other private organizations.



“The agreement will encourage capacity building of both countries in promoting technical know-how and technology transfer as well as development of agriculture extension and research system,” Dahal told myrepublica.com.



The pact also envisages the exchange of scientific and agriculture related information and preservation of intellectual property rights of both the countries. It also aims to promote public private partnership in agriculture sector besides diversification of agriculture products. The two countries will also exchange cooperation in the field of water management and irrigation sector technology, which is a crucial issue for agriculture development.



“We can take benefits from Israel, which has set up model development examples in the field of water management and irrigation despite huge scarcity of water resources,” Dahal, who is one of the members of the delegation to Israel, said.



The pact will also pave the way for the promotion of land conservation programs and appropriate agriculture development programs as well as development of economic activities in rural areas through agriculture sector.



Under the agreement, both countries will promote trade of agriculture products of both countries, besides extending cooperation in the field of veterinary sector.



Israel has been supporting Nepal by providing modern agriculture knowledge and development of Nepali human resources through trainings and academic courses for students and professionals.



During the visit, the Nepali delegation will also observe different agriculture farms and co-operatives in Israel, which can be replicated in Nepal. Israel has earned a reputation for introducing innovative concepts, advanced technologies and economical management of resources in the agriculture sector.
