The border coordination meeting held at the bordering Indian city of Raxaul discussed way to tackle the possible security threat to the election in Nepal due to the porous border.
According to the Nepali officials, both sides agreed to coordinate to ensure free and fair election in Nepal. [break]
The meeting also decided to seal the border from 5 Am to 5 PM on the day of election. The Nepali side was led by Parsa Chief District Officer Kailash Kumar Bajimaya while Indian side was led by Sridhar C, the District Magistrate of East Champaran.
“We have decided to exchange important information besides sealing the border on the polling day,” informed Bajimaya. “We will also coordinate to check import of small arms and other criminal activities.”
Chief District Officers of five neighboring districts of Nepal, Senior Superintendent of Police of Narayani Zone Sarbendra Khanal, Superintendents of Armed Police Force in the five districts as well as chief of Birganj Customs Ram Hari Aryal had also participated in the meeting.
According to Sridhar, the Indian side will conduct tight security check in the bordering areas to avert possible criminal activities, which could affect the poll environment in Nepal.
He also informed that India is vigilant to check any cross-border criminal activities in the bordering areas.
District Magistrate of West Champaran Abhaya Kumar Singh and officers of Indian Armed Police Force as well as M. Akhter from Indian Consulate General´s Office in Birgunj also took part in the meeting from the Indian side.
Beside the poll related security issues, the meeting also discussed way to curb cross-border smuggling as well as pollution in the bordering Sirsiya River.
