KATHMANDU, Dec 9: A diplomatic reception was hosted in Kathmandu on Tuesday to mark the 40th anniversary of the founding of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC).
The event was organised by Secretary General Ambassador Md. Golam Sarwar and Madam Taslima Sarwar, with Vice President Ramsahay Prasad Yadav attending as the Chief Guest.

The reception brought together senior dignitaries, ambassadors, heads of diplomatic missions, business leaders, civil society representatives and members of the media. Leaders from SAARC member states highlighted the importance of regional cooperation in advancing peace, prosperity and inclusive development across South Asia.
Ambassador Sarwar reflected on SAARC’s journey over four decades — from institutional strengthening and programme implementation to the expansion of its global outreach. He expressed gratitude to member and observer states, development partners and international organisations for their continued support.
SAARC was established on 8 December 1985 in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Since then, 8 December has been observed annually as SAARC Charter Day across South Asia.
