Nepal sells electricity at competitive rates on India’s Energy Exchange (IEX) in both the day-ahead and real-time markets, as well as through bilateral medium-term power purchase agreements with the Indian states of Haryana and Bihar.
Leveraging India’s transmission infrastructure, Nepal also exports 40 megawatts of electricity daily to Bangladesh. While electricity trade with India is settled in Indian rupees, exports to Bangladesh are settled in U.S. dollars.
The NEA has received approval to export a total of 1,165 megawatts of electricity to India and Bangladesh, reflecting Nepal’s growing role as a regional power exporter.
