Nepal bags two golds in South Asian Judo C'ship

KATHMANDU, May 13: Nepal bagged two gold, four silver and three bronze medals in the South Asian Judo Championship 2011 held in Pakistan.



Saroj Maharjan clinched the first gold for Nepal in the men´s U-60 kg category while Nepal bagged the second gold in men´s team event at the Liaquat Gymnasium Sports complex, Islamabad on Thursday. [break]



The women´s team had to settle for silver after Radha Devi Rai and Sushila Adhikari of Nepal Police Club got injured during the event. Nepal lost to Pakistan in the final but managed to defeat Afghanistan in the semifinal. Only three countries had competed in the women´s team event.



In the men´s team event, Nepal defeated Pakistan in the semifinal and Bangladesh in the final to win gold despite the injury of one of the players -- Shiva Baram of Nepal Army. Five players each from Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Bangladesh had participated in men´s team event.



In the individual category, Saroj Maharjan defeated the players of Pakistan, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh to clinch gold. Meanwhile, Ramesh Magar had to be satisfied with silver after losing his match against India.



He played the game although he had not fully recovered after his knee surgery following a lift mishap in the 11th South Asian Games in Dhaka last year.



In the women´s U-52 kg, Sushila Adhikari of Nepal Police Club secured silver. She defeated the players of Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan but lost to India.
