KATHMANDU, Feb 16: Nepali Congress (NC) has resumed the conventions to elect representatives to participate in the upcoming general conventions after an interruption following the death of the party's President Sushil Koirala.

The party had halted all the local conventions across the country for some days due to the unexpected demise former Prime Minister Koirala on February 9.

After Koirala's death, the party had deferred the local conventions without making any change to the date of the general convention scheduled to start in Kathmandu on March 3.

Resuming their work, the party's election committees in various districts held conventions to elect district executive committees starting Sunday.

After resumption of the local conventions, new district leadership were elected in Lalitpur, Chitwan and Bardiya districts on Monday. Lawmakers Madan Amatya and Sanjay Gautam were elected district presidents from Lalitpur and Bardiya while Jit Narayan Shrestha was elected as president of Chitwan district.

The NC had earlier deferred all the local conventions including those in the electoral constituencies due to protests carried out by agitating Madhesi parties.

The party's central election committee has deputed returning officers to conduct voting in some Tarai-based districts. The local conventions in Sarlahi, Saptari and Rautahat were underway on Monday evening while the events in Dhanusha, Parsa, Bara and Siraha will be held on Tuesday.

Elections in some mountainous districts including Rasuwa and Solukhumbhu have been deferred until further notice.

"Originally we had planned to conclude all district and other local-level conventions by February 13. Then, we rescheduled it with a plan to conclude those events by coming Friday but it is estimated that it can be done by February 22," NC leader Radheshyam Adhikari, who is coordinator of the party's central election committee, told Republica.

According to him, the elections in 208 of the total 240 electoral constituencies to elect delegates for the general conventions have been held. The party has a provision to elect 12 representatives from each constituency.

Similarly, the conventions to elect district committees have been concluded in 38 of the total 75 districts so far.
