Myagdi Magars reviving 'dead' language

BABIYACHAUR, Aug 4: The Magar people in Myagdi district are learning a version of their centuries-old language in a bid to revive it. The language believed to have become extinct some 400 years ago. [break]



Lokesh Punmagar, a local youth working for safeguarding Magar language, said efforts are underway to revive the language said to have become extinct following the downfall of the Magar principalities at different places in the district.



According to Magar linguists, this version of the Magar language believed to be more than 400 years old is rarely in use.



Punmagar has already published three books on the Magar language and he is currently working on a Magar language grammar.



The Magar language is being taught as an elective subject at 12 different schools in the district from this academic session with the cooperation of different organizations.



The Magar community has demanded that arrangements be made for starting classes in Magar language in all schools in the district.



The Magar language curriculum has been developed at the local level based on inscriptions and ancient script.



The local Magar community hopes that the dead language is on the process of reviving. With the introduction of Magar language that was on the verge of extinction at local schools, Magar students are excited to study the new language.
