According to Muslim rituals, fasting is forbidden on the day of Eid. It is believed that on this day Muslims are summoned by God in the Quran (the holy Islam book) to complete their fasting on the last day of Ramadan and then recite God´s praises all throughout the period of Eid.[break]
During Ramadan, Muslims abstain from food, drink, smoking and sex in a dawn-to-dusk period of self-sacrifice to commemorate the revelation of the Quran to the Prophet Muhammad.
A large number of people, mostly clad in white, offered congregational Eid prayers in several masjids in Birgunj.
Various types of entertainments, ceremonies and feasting were arranged in Birgunj as it is exclusively meant to dedicate oneself to the Islam god—Allah—and show devotion by prayers at all the prescribed times, reciting Quran and celebrating with feasts and family get-togethers.
Charity and giving alms to the poor is the way of life for Muslims during Ramadan. Platters of delicious cuisines were prepared in most of the Muslims´ households across the country.
