Mt Everest base camp in Tibet to reopen after Nepal quake

BEIJING, July 1: In some good news for hikers, the Mount Everest base camp in Tibet, closed after the devastating earthquake in neighbouring Nepal on April 25, will reopen to climbers tomorrow.

The base camp of the world's highest peak was shut down for security reasons following the 7.8-magnitude temblor that killed nearly 9,000 people, including climbers and guides, on the Nepalese side of the Everest.


Despite the reopening of the base camp, roads leading to the base camp will be subject to periodic traffic controls or remain closed, state-run news agency reported citing a spokesperson with the tourism bureau of Tingri County today.

The base camp, located 5,200 metres above sea level, saw a record 59,100 visitors in 2014.
During the April 25 earthquake in Nepal, some parts of southern Tibet were also badly shaken. At least 26 people were killed in Tibet due the temblor.
