KATHMANDU, May 5: Experts have said majority of housing apartments in the Kathmandu Valley will be fit for living only after they undergo repair works.

Experts from the Department of Urban Development and Building Construction (DoUDBC), who made visual assessment of housing apartments after the deadly earthquake that shook the country on April 25, said most of the apartments should undergo extensive maintenance.

DoUDBC had formed a six-member inspection committee under the leadership of Sagar Krishna Joshi, chief of the Kathmandu District Divisional Office of DUBDC, on April 28 to assess the conditions of apartments in the Valley."We have inspected around 15 apartments so far. Most of the apartments that we have inspected so far need some maintenance. Of them, the Park View Horizon Apartment of Dhapasi has suffered serious damages," he added.

Terming Park View Horizon 'problematic', the team has pasted red sticker on its building.

Likewise, around 10 apartments, including City Sketch of Hattiban and Grand Apartment of Dhumbarahi, according to Joshi, need some serious repair works. "There was no problem in structure of these apartments. However, they have significant wall cracks. People should live there only after all the cracks are mended," he added.

The team has pasted yellow stickers on these buildings.

Meanwhile, the monitoring team found four housing apartments, including Oriental Apartment of Dhapasi, in perfect conditions. They have been given green stickers.

DoUDBC officials, however, denied revealing names of all the apartments that they inspected.

According to the DoUDBC, 70 apartments have been registered in Kathmandu Valley. However, only 55 of them are in operation and people are living in only 31 of them.

"We will complete inspection of other apartments within a week," said Joshi. "This, however, is preliminary inspection. Detailed assessment will be done in the second phase."
