KATHMANDU, Oct 26: The total number of SMS during Dashain has almost doubled compared to last year. According to Nepal Telecom (NT), more than 25 million messages were sent from October 20 to October 24. Likewise the total number of SMS during same period through GSM users in Dashain was 12.80 million.

As all the offices and business houses remain close during Dashain, telecom operators offer various discount to retain the business. However, the data shows that the increasing trend of sending festival greetings during Dashain through SMS has instead helped the operators to earn more revenue than in normal days.[break]

An official of NT said that on October 20 the number of SMS was 4.1 million and the number increased to 5 million on the day of Fulpati. Likewise more than 5.4 million SMS were exchanged on the day of Mahaastami and Mahanawami. The number declined to 4.6 million on the day of Tika, the official said.

The operator had recorded the highest revenue from SMS on the day of Fulpati and Mahastami last year where the number reached 3.4 million on each day.

The state-owned operator along with Ncell and UTL have also offered festive scheme which will be valid till third week of November.

NT has provided 50 percent discount on SMS tariff till mid-November.

GunaKesari Pradhan, spokesperson of NT said that the increment was due to the increasing number of mobile users and growing SMS culture.

Likewise, Ncell has offered Utsav Pack and Ncell Express marking festive season. Ncell users can win weekly prizes including laptops, smartphone along with bumper prize of Rs 1 million cash till November 24.

Under the scheme launched by UTL, customers spending highest on the day can win Colors G200 mobile handset and UTL U-SIM with Rs 200 worth of talk time.
