In a bid to promote Nepal´s economic influence and expand market for Nepali products in the international market by mobilizing Nepal´s inactive diplomatic missions, the government has recently decided to formulate an economic diplomacy package with the involvement of different line ministries.
"Major focus of the proposed action plan is to take maximum benefits from international trade treaties," Toya Narayan Gyawali, joint-secretary at the MoCS, said.
Gyawali said the action plan has outlined the need to immediately review the Railway Service Agreement (RSA) with India and bring into operation the Rohanpur-
Sighabad Railway route for trade with Bangladesh, opening of Vishakhapatnam port for delivery of Nepal´s imports, simplification of clearing process at Kolkata port, and trade talks with Bangladesh and Bhutan at the earliest.
The action plan also includes making Nepali missions more active with additional human resources to promote Nepal´s business interests abroad and enhance Nepal´s position in the international trade by focusing on regional trade and making effective utilization of Aid for Trade (AFT).
Similarly, the proposed action plan underlines the need to utilize existing bilateral and multi-lateral trade treaties signed by Nepal in the past to facilitate the expansion of market for Nepali products.
Different ministries that are directly related to the economic and trade sectors are proposing their action plan on trade, tourism, foreign employment, foreign direct investment (FDI) and foreign aid incorporating the proposed programs to be included in the upcoming economy diplomacy to be adopted by Nepal.
