KATHMANDU, Oct 19: Minister for Communication and Information Technology Jagdish Kharel has clarified that the watch he was seen wearing is not a multi-million-rupee Rolex, but a “Roster” brand watch.
His clarification came after photos of him wearing what many on social media claimed to be a “Rolex Daytona” worth around Rs 14.4 million went viral.
Minister Kharel meets Deuba; What did they discuss?
Minister Kharel said the watch is actually a “Roster” and belongs to his elder brother, who teaches at the University of Tokyo in Japan.
“This is not a Rolex but a Roster watch. It belongs to my brother, who teaches at the University of Tokyo. He bought it many years ago,” Kharel explained.
He added that the watch had been left behind in Nepal when his brother visited about four years ago, and he has occasionally worn it since then. The Minister also said the model is about 15 years old and might not even be available in the market anymore.
“I couldn’t find its price on Google either, but after asking some friends, I learned it might cost somewhere between Rs 30,000 and Rs 60,000,” he said.
Kharel, who has been active in journalism since 2005, was recently appointed Minister for Communication and Information Technology. Soon after his appointment, social media users began posting comments about his watch.
