KATHMANDU, March 8: Prime Minister Sushila Karki has emphasized the need to ensure meaningful and quality participation of women while strengthening gender equality, democratic values, and social justice.
On the occasion of International Women’s Day, she noted that many women are still deprived of quality education, basic healthcare, dignified employment, and representation in leadership positions. “The mindset of questioning women’s capability still lingers. Yesterday’s discrimination at home now appears in workplaces,” she said. She stressed that the goal should not be limited to increasing participation but ensuring substantive and quality engagement.

Highlighting disparities, she said, “While access to education has expanded and awareness has risen, not all women are in the same situation.” Women from marginalized communities—Dalit women, women from Karnali, Madhesh, and other excluded groups—need their voices clearly reflected in state policymaking.
Prime Minister Karki further stated that building an equitable society based on equality, empowerment, and social justice is a historic responsibility not only of the state but also of political parties, civil society, private sector, media, and national and international development partners.
She added, “Democracy will be strengthened only when women receive respect, security, and equal opportunities. Only then can the spirit of the constitution be realized, and a prosperous, just, and inclusive Nepal be built.”
She concluded by wishing that the day reinforces equality, justice, inclusiveness, and democratic awareness for all.
