Data from the 2011 Census has revealed that marriages in north India and Maharashtra last longer than any other part in the country, and they are the shortest in the northeast.
According to The Times of India, in northern India more people get married at an early age, and with increasing life spans, couples end up being married for 40 years. The report shows that in northern India, 11-12 percent of couples have been married for 40 years or more, on the other hand, the northeast has less than 7 percent such marriages the lowest being in Meghalaya — 4.1 percent.
Professor Bimal Kar of Guwahati University told The Times of India that the reason for the situation in the northeast was because people got married at an older age and had lower life spans.
Across the country, only 10 percent of couples have been married for 4o years or over.
