DHARAN, Dec 20: Even as Maoist cadres across the country were engaged in scuffles with the police on the first day of their three-day nationwide general strike, their counterparts in Dharan engaged themselves by sweeping the streets instead. [break]

Even the security personnel, who had been mobilized to control possible violent activities, were taken by surprise at the Maoists´ show of civic sense. “It´s far better to be involved in cleaning the locality instead of being engaged in violent acts,” opined sub inspector Som Sinjali. “We have been mobilized to ward off possible violence, but no untoward incident has been reported as of yet,” Sinjali added.

More than 100 Maoist cadres cleaned the streets from Chhata Chowk to Bhanu Chowk during the campaign called by the Sunsari constituency No 1 committee of the Maoists. Leaders, including central committee member Prahlad Budhathoki, Sunsari in-charge Mukesh and deputy in-charge Ratna were themselves present with brooms to lead the campaign.

“Protests should not necessarily be violent. We can also make it creative,” said deputy in-charge of Sunsari constituency No 1 CP Dutta. “We want to connect this protest with the work of the common people,” he added.

Maoists say they will use these three days to fulfill the wishes of common people to make the city cleaner.
