Mahara’s statement recording concludes, detention hearing to begin today

The prosecution has demanded over Rs 85.5 million in compensation from Mahara.

KATHMANDU, Oct 16: The statement recording of former Speaker Krishna Bahadur Mahara, who was arrested in connection with the gold smuggling case, has concluded. His statement was recorded at the Kathmandu District Court on Tuesday.



According to the court, the detention hearing in Mahara’s case will begin on Wednesday. Following the hearing, the court will decide whether to keep him in custody for further proceedings or release him on bail or general date.

The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police arrested Mahara on Sunday. Based on the CIB’s investigation report, the District Government Attorney’s Office, Kathmandu, filed a case against him at the Kathmandu District Court on Monday, charging him with customs evasion and organized crime.


The prosecution has demanded over Rs 85.5 million in compensation from Mahara.
