KATHMANDU, April 5: An earthquake of 7.1 magnitude struck off the coast of the New Britain region in Papua New Guinea, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said on Saturday.
The quake was at a depth of 49 km (30.45 miles), EMSC said, as the U.S. Tsunami Warning Center has issued a tsunami warning.

The earthquake hit around 6:04 AM. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) stated that the epicenter was 194 kilometers east of Kimbe city.
The U.S. Tsunami Warning Center issued an alert for possible tsunami waves along Papua New Guinea's coastal areas and warned of small waves up to 3 meters for neighboring Solomon Islands.
No damage reports have emerged so far. However, local media reported that nearby areas, including Kimbe, felt the tremors. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and collecting further information.
