JANAKPUR, July 27: In response to prolonged drought and growing water scarcity in Madhesh Province, the provincial government has begun installing deep boring systems across all wards.
The Ministry of Energy, Irrigation and Drinking Water of Madhesh has launched the initiative, prioritizing drinking water over irrigation in both urban and rural areas. Minister Sheshnarayan Yadav said the installations will be carried out based on necessity and urgency due to limited resources.
Water woes deepen as over 200 deep borings go defunct in Siraha
The province has already been declared a drought-hit zone by the provincial government, and the federal government has also marked it as a “crisis area” for three months. Tankers and fire engines are currently supplying free drinking water to severely affected areas.
As part of the first phase, deep boring installation has begun in Parasuram Pond area of Mithila Bihari Municipality-2 in Dhanusha. The construction is being carried out through the province’s underground irrigation offices in Jaleshwar, Lahan, Karmeya (Sarlahi), and Birgunj, covering two districts each.
Meanwhile, the federally-run Kamala Irrigation Management Office in Portaha has also been installing deep borings in Dhanusha and Siraha since the last fiscal year, according to office chief Birendra Yadav. He said the installations have somewhat eased the region’s irrigation and drinking water problems.
