Taking exception to the decision of the Committee on Natural Resources and Means of parliament to stop all works related to the project till the committee gives another directive, a committee of locals in the vicinity of the project area organized a press meet in Dhangadi on Saturday and claimed that the project has not materialized due to vested interests of the political parties.[brak]
The parliamentary committee on March 9 had formed an 11-member sub-committee to probe the signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with China Three Gorges Corporation (CTGC).
“We were elated after the MoU with CTGC and hoped that the project would finally be constructed but have been dispirited due to political bickering over the project,” said chairman of the local stakeholders´ committee Ratan Saud. “A project cannot be stopped just because a party does not get commission or another party gets the credit for its construction,” Saud added.
Raju Bhattarai of Doti warned that the locals will not remain silent spectators if the 750 MW project is stalled due to disagreement between the parties.
“They didn´t give us drinking water, irrigation and other projects saying the hydropower project will come soon. And now they are trying to abort this project,” said Bishnu Chand of Dhangadi, Baitadi and warned of stringent protests if the project is aborted.
