DAMAULI, Dec 20: Residents of Belbas in Byas Municipality–13, affected by the under-construction 140-megawatt Tanahu Hydropower Project, have called for fair compensation, citing risks to their settlement.

The project, based in Jhaptutar of Rishing Rural Municipality–1, is expected to impact Belbas, with concerns that parts of the settlement could be submerged once the project is operational. Meghnath Acharya, a member of the concerned committee, pointed out that the Asian Development Bank’s detailed study report also highlights the risk of inundation in Belbas.

Locals claim that the embankment built to protect the project office has diverted the Seti River toward Belbas, increasing the risk to their homes. They have urged authorities to provide proper compensation, noting that relocation to a safer area may be necessary in the future.

The committee raised these concerns during a recent visit by Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Kulman Ghising to Tanahun. According to committee coordinator Yam Bahadur Ale, approximately 170 households are expected to be affected by the project.
