KATHMANDU, Sept 7: Lalitpur Metropolitan City (LMC) has demolished structures illegally built on a historic pond in Lagankhel. The operation involved three bulldozers and dozens of municipal police personnel.
The site located in Ward No. 5 includes a pond registered under the government’s name (Plot No. 105, Area 17-0-0-0), known locally as Nhuh Pokhari, which dates back centuries. The structures were removed after a 35-day notice issued by the metropolitan city expired.

Officials stated that unauthorized constructions had been gradually encroaching on the pond, threatening its existence. In line with the LMC’s policy to protect public land and historic ponds, a detailed project report (DPR) for the renovation and preservation of Nhuh Pokhari has already been approved, with budget allocation completed.
“The unauthorized structures at the northeastern edge of the pond, previously used by Buddhi Bikash Mandal and Nepal Tuberculosis Prevention Association, were removed to safeguard public land and historical heritage,” the metropolitan city said in a notice, citing provisions under the Local Government Operation Act, 2074 (Section 97) and the Muluki Civil Code 2074 (Section 304).
