Lessons from our canine friends

Studies claim that dogs have been man’s best friends for 40,000 years. Not surprising, given the positive energy of our canine friends and the loyalty that they continue to inspire in each of us. On Friday, about 200 dog owners came together with their pawed pals to participate in the fifth Grand Dog Show at the Satdobato Swimming Complex in Saatdobato, Lalitpur. Organized by K9 Dog Training & Care, Bullet Dog Breeder, and Pawsative Pet Solution, the show also had competitions under various heads like puppy show, mongrel (cross-breed) show, dog ramp show, dog item show, among others. The event premises also featured kennel club stalls, pet accessories stalls, and food stalls and free grooming and medical check-ups for dogs.

Prabin Bajracharya of K9 Dog Training & Care said the participation this year has been ‘overwhelming.’ “This only shows how we’ve started viewing our pet dogs as an essential part of our families. Hopefully, in the coming days, we’ll start adopting street dogs or at least not treat them as ‘animals’,” he said.
Republica’s Sadiksha Piya talked to some of the participants of the dog show about their pets and lessons they’ve learnt from their canine friends. Here’s what they had to say.

I love Hulk. He inspires me with his loyalty and unconditional love. When we brought him home just 40 days after his birth, I could never imagine the little pup would grow up to be so big in just two years. I see this strong sense of valiance and masculinity whenever I look at him, and that is impressive. But like they say, looks can be fooling. He is still a baby at heart and will do anything to get a share of birthday cakes and mo:mo. Also, he just eats mo:mos from Mahabharat Mo:Mo of Patan Dhoka once in every two weeks.

Biru, now three and half years old, was only about six months old when we welcomed him into the family. I have realized that though in a different physical form than human beings, dogs have the same soul that craves for love, care and affection. I’ve also learnt that they reciprocate our love and affection by twofold. There’s never a dull moment with him around.

Rocky is five months old and he is a very good friend of mine. He always cheers me up and although he looks big, he’s really friendly and doesn’t scare people away without a reason. I love that he is never in a bad mood. He makes me feel loved and respected.

Pawana Paudel, 30

Duku is the darling of our home and has been living with us for four months now. He’s five months old and is always playful and energetic. No matter how difficult a day we have had, just a sight of him is enough to de-stress ourselves. He has taught me that positive energy is contagious and I try to remain as positive and happy as he always is.

We’ve had Alex for just three months now but it feels like he’s always been there with us. He’s just six months old but he inspires me so much. I have learnt from him that it’s easy to like someone when they’re happy with themselves. Alex is always cheerful and excited, and unlike human beings, he never holds grudges against people who matter to him. This is something I try to inculcate in my own life.

Saru Maharjan, 21
Undergraduate student of Food Technology

Piku is a boxer and she’s just two and half months old. She was only three weeks when we brought her home. She is not the first pet we’ve had, but she’s truly special for us in every way. I love how she gets all excited when I return home from college. I forget all of my worldly stress when I see the happiness on her face. As clichéd as it might sound, the best lesson that I’ve learnt from her is that of loyalty. She’s always there for us no matter what.

Jambo is a Saint Bernard—the breed that hails from the Swiss Alps, and are normally bred for rescue purposes. But that doesn’t mean he is dangerous. He is actually friendly and loving, and the biggest lesson I’ve learnt from him is that of selfless love. He is only 14 months old, but he has a sharp memory and easily remembers everyone. However, he does get defensive when any one of us is in danger and that makes me feel protected.
