Lack of programs affect health sector

KATHMANDU, Jan. 28: The health sector has been badly affected as the government could not bring new programs in the current fiscal year. The government had given continuity to only the old programs in the budget.



The health sector has been affected as the Health Sector Reform Program was not extended further. The program has been running since long with the financial and technical support of different donor agencies including World Bank, World Health Organization, UNICEF, and DFID, among others.



The Ministry of Health and Population has been facing problems after the programme was not further extended in the current fiscal year.



The donor agencies have been providing support to Health Sector Reform Program (2010-2015) through one-door system.



The donor agencies have expressed commitment to provide support of more than two billion rupees during the period.



At a programme organised by the Ministry of Health and Population here today to review the program, Secretary at the Ministry, Dr. Praveen Mishra, said that the programme has improved health conditions of the backward people.



Mishra said the program was not extended due to lack of new programs in the current fiscal year.



Representatives of the Ministry and donor agencies are participating in a three-day review meeting.



On the occasion, Chief of Donor Agency Support Program, Dr. Lin Wang, expressed the view that there was no remarkable progress in the health sector as per the commitment expressed by the government.



Discussion on contribution made by the program in overall health sector as well as problems will be held in the meeting, it is learnt.
