KATHMANDU, Oct 7: The diverse musical offerings from Coke Studio Pakistan now include the melodious tunes of sarangi and flute from Nepal. Kutumba’s Kiran Nepali, Rubin Shrestha and Siddhartha Maharjan have provided segments of Nepali music for the sixth season of the popular music series.

Band Manager Arun Gurung explains that Coke Studio Pakistan had sent an email to the band three months ago, inquiring whether they would be interested in playing for them. Gurung says, “They were in a process of recording new sounds. It seems they had already done their research and they wanted to infuse sounds of Nepal, like sarangi and the sound of bells, in their composition. They particularly said they wanted to record something ethnic.” [break]

After a team of three – a director, a videographer and a sound engineer – arrived in Kathmandu, they recorded around five compositions of different tracks with the sarangi played by Nepali, the flute played by Shrestha and metal percussion by Maharjan. On June 24, between the band’s concerts in the morning and evening, Kutumba recorded for the series that had also travelled to cities in Pakistan and India, compiling music and shooting for their new show.

The recorded compositions will be compiled and presented by Coke Studio, the release date of which has not been finalized yet.

For the folk instrumental band, the experience was exciting, as Maharjan says, “It felt really good to be part of the show. We’ve been following Coke Studio and we had never imagined that we would also be contributing music for the show.”
