Garbage disposal which has been halted since Sunday has left almost 4,000 tons solid waste unattended to in the Valley.
Locals at the Aletar landfill site in Makawanpur district have put forward a 13 point demand, including employment to locals, construction of an 80-bed hospital, proper management of the landfill sites and a three kilometer blacktopped road in every ward.
Dipendra Oli, legal advisor of SWMRMC said that the government is in no state to provide employment to the locals except on local level at the landfill site. “The government has procedures. We cannot alter the process to provide employment,” Oli said.
“If KMC asks us to provide security, we are ready,” said Chief District Officer of Kathmandu Laxmi Dhakal.
“However, until now, KMC has not sought our help by written or oral means. The moment KMC seeks our help, we will mobilize the police,” Dhakal said.
Oli said KMC has also been looking for alternatives to Aletar landfill site.
