KATHMANDU, Aug 10: Kathmandu on Monday recorded a maximum temperature of 32.2 degree Celsius, the highest in five years. In August 8, 2010, Kathmandu had witnessed a record high maximum temperature of 32.6 degree Celsius.

According to the Meteorological Forecasting Division (MFD) of the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM), 32.6 degree Celsius, which was recorded in 2010, is the highest recorded temperature of Kathmandu.Even going by the everyday weather forecast, temperature over the last three days has soared by at least 2 degree Celsius. While 32.2 degree Celsius was recorded on Monday, it was just 29 degree Celsius the earlier day.

On Friday, maximum temperature of Kathmandu was recorded at 27 degree Celsius. "In the last few days, temperature has soared in the central and eastern parts of the country. There has been a significant rise in temperature in Kathmandu," said Subhash Rimal, meteorologist at MFD. According to Rimal, local climatic conditions have played a major role in the abrupt change in temperature.

"Currently, there has been no rainfall for a few days. Moreover, local effect rather than monsoon trough has played significant role in increasing the temperature in Kathmandu," said Rimal.

On Monday, Nepalgunj recorded maximum temperature of 36.5 degree Celsius, Dipayal 36.4 degree Celsius, Biratnagar 35.2 degree Celsius and Dhangadhi 35 degree Celsius.

As per the weather report on Monday evening, brief rainfall or thundershower is likely occur in some parts of the country. There are chances of heavy rainfall mostly in the eastern region.

"Kathmandu is likely to witness high temperatures for a few more days as only patches of clouds have been spotted," said Rimal.
