DHARAN, April 28: Agitating junior resident doctors at the BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS) on Sunday padlocked the offices of four top officials stating that BPKIHS administration did not pay heed to their demands.

The junior doctors had been organizing various protest programs for the last five days on the premises of the hospital.[break]

Junior Resident Welfare Society (JRWS), a group of 241 doctors at BPKHIS, said it has "indefinitely" padlocked the offices of BPKIHS Vice-chancellor Dr B P Das, Rector Dr Bikram Shrestha, Director D. Arbind Sinha and Registrar Nanda Kumar Thapa from Sunday.

Bikash Gauchan, the president of JRWS said, “Our mild agitation went unheeded. So, we resorted to padlocking the offices of the top officials as part of our phase-wise protest program.”

JRWS has demanded that it should be included in the regular senate meeting of BPKIHS, around 50 percent seats of postgraduation program should be reserved for each department under the Faculty Development Program (FDP), existing tuition fees are very high so the fees should not be increased for at least three years, and disclosure of the investigation report into last year´s irregularities in MD, MS and MDS exams among other things.

Likewise, the junior resident doctors have stopped working at the indoor patients department from Sunday and have announced to shut all services including emergency services from Monday, according to President Gauchan.

The junior doctors have already stopped working at the outdoor patients department since last Wednesday. The protest has affected hundreds of patients.

As many as 241 junior resident doctors are currently pursuing master´s degree in medical science (MD, MS and MDS) at BPKIHS.

Meanwhile, Director of the hospital, Dr. Arbind Sinha alleged that the junior doctors are boycotting the treatment by forwarding irrelevant demands. He also said the BPKIHS cannot fulfill "impossible" demands.

The hospital administration and the JRWS have held several rounds of talks so far.
