Certain turn of events and the opportunity to work with a bank cropped up and he’s happy with his job, with no complaints whatsoever![break]
Republica caught up with the young banker and asked him what he thinks of his life and his experience working in the banking sector in Nepal.
Why did you join the banking sector?
When I completed my Bachelor’s, I worked for FedEx in the marketing department for two months. Then I moved on to an IT company and then to a Management Consultant Company. I actually didn’t want to work in a bank. But when the opportunity knocked on the door more than once, I took it as a sign and joined Vibor Bank. It’s been fun so far working in the HR and Operations department. There’s no particular answer to why I joined. I just joined!
What did you actually want to be?
I didn’t have any specific plans when I was doing my Bachelor’s and I still don’t. I think a person should be capable of taking any job related to his/her field. It’s all about opportunity. I took a break from my studies because I wanted to gain some experience. However, I do plan to do my Masters in Business Administration soon.
How difficult is it working in a bank?
Working anywhere is tough. But it’s the people around you who make it fun. The day one says “I don’t feel like going to work” is the day one should realize that it’s time to move on from the job. I’ve seen people stuck to one post for 19 years and I’m surprised that they aren’t realizing that they’re getting stagnant. However, for me, it’s fun at the moment working with my colleagues and friends.
What’s the fun part about being in the banking sector?
Like I said, it’s the people who make the workplace fun. If you don’t or can’t get along with them, life’s no fun. Besides that, I get to work, get paid and have fun at the same time. I’m financially stable and I don’t know what else could be more fun than that!
What would your suggestions be to students who want to work in the banking sector?
I say, take your time before you join work or decide where to work. Take a year off or something and when interesting opportunities come, don’t let go of them. At the end of the day, for young people like us, it’s all about the experience and you need to get more of it. Some of my friends are still trying to reach where I am today, even though they have Master’s degrees and I don’t. So gain as much experience you can and then follow your heart!
