Indian national held for smuggling tiger parts

NEPALGUNJ, May 5: District Police Office (DPO) of Banke made public an Indian national on Tuesday who was arrested while attempting to smuggle endangered striped tiger skin to India.

Ramjus Banjara, 60, of Ludhiana, Punjab, was arrested on Monday by regional investigation bureau of Nepal Police from his temporary home at Jayanagar of Magaragadi, Bardiya. Police seized tiger skin and bones from his rented room.According to DSP Ashok Singh, head of the regional investigation team, poachers are able to hunt tiger and smuggle its parts easily to India due to open border. "The poacher most likely killed the tiger in Bardiya National Park as it is close to his residence," said the DSP.

In a statement to the police, Banjara said he purchased the tiger parts from a local for Rs 7,000. Police suspect locals' involvement in poaching .

Sub-inspector Basanta Kuar Pant of the DPO said the arrestee and confiscated items would be handed over to DPO of Bardiya for legal action. "As he was arrested from Bardiya, we would hand him over to the Bardiya DPO," said Pant.
