RAUTAHAT, May 18: In the last six years, four Indian nationals have turned the sandy banks of Bagmati River in Rautahat into a massive plantation area and have been earning millions in profits through the sale of cucumber and watermelon.

Ramdev Sah, Ramdhyan Sah, Bigu Bahadur Sah and Shivaji Sah, originally from Bihar of India, had leased more than 100 bighas of land to grow cucumber and watermelon.

Mishralal Sah, a local, said that the Indian farmers have proved that hard work pays off.

The watermelons and cucumbers grown by the Indian farmers are exported to Hetauda, Narayangadh, Pokhara and Kathmandu.

Praising the Indian farmers, another local Sankhar Pandit said, “Hardly anything grows in sand, but these farmers have done wonders

,” said Pandit.

According to Rautahat District Agriculture Development Office (DADO), locals in several other VDCs have started similar undertakings. “Since there is little investment in this kind of farming, many locals have followed suit,” said chief of DADO Raj Narayan Yadav.
