Earlier, the expert teams from the department had identified settlements in six districts, which are at high risk of landslides. Two weeks ago, the department had deployed 18 groups of experts in Gorkha, Dhading, Rasuwa, Dolakha, Sindhupalchowk and Nuwakot districts to identify villages at risk of landslide and to recommend places where the settlements can be relocated. Last week, it had submitted its report to the home ministry."But as the report did not specify sites where the risky settlements can be relocated, the committee decided to ask the department to send back its team of experts to the districts," said joint-secretary at the home ministry Rameshwar Dangal.
He, however, did not disclose the number of settlements at risk of landslides stating that it may cause fear among the locals.
"The settlements at risk of landslide will be relocated within the respective districts as far as possible. As relocating a settlement from one district to another may invite complication, the committee has also directed the department to identify safe locations within the district," said he.
He said the department will jointly work with the district disaster relief committee and lawmakers from the respective districts to relocate settlements at risk of landslide.
Secretary at the Prime Minister's Office Shanta Raj Subedi, who was also at the meeting, said the department will recommend relocation sites in the six districts.
