SINDHULI, June 12: Despite having survived the catastrophic 7.8 magnitude earthquake of April 25 and subsequent aftershocks, Makar Bhujel of Majuwa-6 of Sindhuli district says locals of the village might not survive the upcoming monsoon due to risk of landslides.

Hills surrounding the village have developed deep cracks after the earthquake and locals fear the monsoon rains would trigger landslides in those areas.

"If appropriate measures are not taken, many people will lose their lives this monsoon," said a local.Around two dozen villages in the district are at high risk of landslides. Of them, one dozen villages will need to be relocated immediately.

According to Krishna Prasad Poudel, chief of the District Land Conservation Office (DLCO), villages at the high risk of landslide include Nagi of Majuwa VDC, Ganeshthan of Kuseshwor Dumja, Falep of Khang Sang, Fadkey of Tinkanya, Ramdada of Netrakali VDC, among others.

According to the data provided by the DLCO, 1,216 households in these villages are at high risk of landslides. "This is just a preliminary report. There might be more households at such risk," said Poudel. As many as 319 families of Majuwa VDC alone are at high risk of landslide.

"After our house was destroyed in the quake, we've been living in a makeshift house. I don't know if we will survive if landslides occur," said Dhruba Bhandari of Majuwa-9.

Poudel said every village in the district should be on high alert and adopt precautionary measures.

Locals of villages have demanded that they be relocated to safer places before the monsoon starts, which is just days away. "Although we've been informed that our village falls is at a high risk of landslide, local government bodies have made no plans to relocate us," said Ramesh Bhandari, a local of Majuwa.
